This is a rare and unusual antique French Faience whimsical Lantern in handled jug style form. T here is a separate matching candle holder insert. The subject matter includes a décor of two caricature figures in colloquial costumes amid floral decor landscapes. The lantern has a front opening where a candle would be placed: the top is pierced in front to release the heat. There is a knob on top, and a large rear handle the back. The inside and underside bottom of this lantern are glaze d in white; the underside rim foot is unglazed. The inside bottom has a makers marks: a large a double ribbon bow in green glaze. On the matching candle holder, t he underside base is unglazed in the red clay typical of the Nevers region, and has two makers marks: markings in a brown glaze of FC and a double ribbon bow in green glaze. These are early marks of Montagnon, old and original French Art Pottery, made at the Antoine Montagnon Factory in the mid to late 19th Century. Modeling, decorating, and glaze that are well done with typical colors of Montagnon pottery: creamy white background decorated with varying shades of blue, yellow, green, and magenta. Faience manufacture was from central France in the area of the same name. The area was famous for superb art pottery known as. A pottery technique whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied over a modeled. Or clay forms, and fired several times in a kiln. Please note this faience item is not Quimper, but is from. This French Antique MONTAGNON Whimsical Lantern is in very good condition- there is a surface glaze loss on the tip of the top knob, and a glaze loss on the side if the handle. On the matching c andle holder, t he loop handle has been br o ken off and two stub s remaining; there is a small glaze loss on the top rim edge. Otherwise, condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. Overall, this item is sound, having no other chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. Please see all photos which are a part of this description.
