FOURMAINTRAUX COURQUIN French Faience c1890. This rare and whimsical French Faience Antique Fourmaintraux DONKEY DOUBLE SALT. Is in the form of a standing donkey on a plinth. Has a subject matter of a whimsical donkey with floral decor; he has one ear up; and ha two fancy square baskets strapped to a decorative saddle across his back. Is modeled in deep relief- the modeling, decorating, and glaze are well done with typical colors of Desvres pottery: creamy white background decorated with varying shades of blue, green, yellow, and magenta. Has an indented glazed bottom on the underside; the foot rim is unglazed. On the underside there are two makers marks: stylized markings in a blue glaze of FC and a C. These are early marks of Fourmaintraux Courquin, old and original French Art Pottery, hand made in the Desvres region of France at the Fourmaintraux Factory, circa 1875 to 1900. Dimensions (in inches): 5.3 Tall X 4.2 Wide X 6.1 Deep. Weight: 12.4 Oz. The estimated date is circa 1890. This French Faience Antique FOURMAINTRAUX COURQUIN DONKEY DOUBLE SALT is in very good condition. Noting there is a small glaze loss on the front top corner of the right side basket. Please see all photos which are a part of this description. Condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing, and fretting. Overall, this work is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. Please note; photos have been taken in indirect sunlight; therefore, reflections and lighting spots may appear, but do not necessarily indicate defects. This is Desvres style fine country French art pottery. This style includes production techniques whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied and worked in stages upon a modeled terra cotta pottery form and fired several times in a kiln. It is noted that French Faience is not inherently “perfect” – larger pieces were still hand made in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over.
