This distinctive French faience plate with a bear in a tree was made by Creil circa 1820. The scene in the center is titled L’ours Martin” (or the “Martin Bear). The plate was part of the series, Savant Animals of Creil. ” (We could translate “savant” as “learned). The plate is a wonderful example of polychrome transferware. There are rich colors of deep blue, gold, brown, gray, and reddish orange. The central theme shows the bear in a walled enclosure viewed by a group of spectators. There was actually court case in France involving the unfortunate encounter of the bear with someone who scaled the wall. The plate is 8 inches in diameter.
