Glazed wall vase in the form of a shoe, or chaussure. This vase is decorated with a characteristic. Breton cornemuse, or bagpipie, motif typical of Quimper and Bretagne. Signed HB to the instep. The signature dates to the period 1883 – 1895. Quimper is a town synonymous with the production Breton faience, the production of which dates back to 1708 when Pierre Bousquet opened the original Grand Maison in Place Styvel in the Locmaria district of Quimper. This highly decorative wall vase in the form of a heeled shoe, or chaussure, dates back to 1875, and signed with the HB monogram used between 1883 and 1895. The hole from which to hang the vase is positioned on the inside of the heel. But lack of wear would suggest it has never been displayed on a wall. This piece is finished in the. Typical Quimper polychrome colour palette, and decorated with two traditionally dressed Breton men playing a flute and a cornemuse, o r bagpipes. Minuscule dots of yellow glaze missing on the yellow rim, the result of the firing process in the kiln. Other Quimper pieces are available from lacewing-provencal.
