This is a superb large Gothic jardiniere or planter with the trio of SATYR BACCHUS heads. The satyr is a mythological character with long, pointed ears, lippy lips, goats beard, small horns growing from his forehead, a hairy human body. Among the Greeks and Romans, this monstrous half-god is often, like the fauns , pictured with goats feet. The satyr is usually represented with the god of the vine and the wine Dionysus (Bacchus), or the god Pan. According to this theme of bacchanalia, it is often found in the company of a sleeping nymph or with a goat. Its attributes are thyrse, cutting or pipeaux. The artists frequently made satyr statues, alone or in groups. His mask or figure can also be found in antique-inspired decorative objects, especially during the 16th and 17th centuries. See attached photos of satyr statuettes forming the coves of a vase in the park of the Palace of Versailles. A large Gothic planter with wonderful decoration of.
