Pair of vintage HenRiot Quimper Petit Breton Plates. These plates represent the classic hand-painted “Petit Breton” women popularized in the later 1800’s and are ideal for the collector, avid gardener, homeowner or designer looking to enliven a space, add artisanal authenticity or convey French ambiance. The 24.5 cm/9.5 inch handmade and hand-painted vintage Henriot Quimper “Petit Breton” woman plate was produced after 1922, likely circa 1930 based on its design, mark and condition. Henriot decided to use the family name to replace the HR mark after 1922 when the 1898 legal challenge over the similarity of their pottery mark with the Grand Maison Faiencer was finally resolved: the court sided with the Grand Maison which held onto their HB mark. This plate is signed by either artist number 7 or 1 in the european style. Artist numbers were added beginning in 1900 to identify the painter-artist. The presence of France after the mark indicates this piece was likely a commissioned piece for export. Consistent with age and use, a glaze flake is present on the lower left lip to rim, and glaze loss around the rim and diminutive crazing are present. The vibrant palette of yellow, blue, green and red, hallmarks of Quimper pottery, beautifully showcase the charm and enduring appeal of the central figure. At this time, Henriot designs, forms and the painter’s initials were hand-painted on the reverse with the stamped Henriot Quimpermark. Previously owned from a private collection and in its original, mint condition. The plate is Form 176 (F176), Design 118 (D118), and painted by the artist with initials HD.
