Offered for your review and consideration is this absolutely gorgeous, G. Deboul, Sant Vicens, Fr an ce, post-WWII, mid-20th century faience glazed, hand painted, figurative shallow, curved sidewall, wheel-thrown terracotta ceramic plate, featuring an exotic Bird of Paradise or peacock, with its decorative fanned tail and full, expanding plumage. The thick, semi-transparent faience glaze features olives, golds, teal and light burnt sienna and burnt umber washes. The image of a standing bird surrounded by its own plumage and perhaps flora, is completely hand painted and has extraordinary, sensitive and emotive line. The limited color palette is truly exceptional, with a surprising choice of earthy, muddy light and deep olives, contrasting with the gaseous, almost celestial light and slightly saturated teal blue-greens of the exotic bird’s feathers, with the bird’s body washed with a semi-transparent burnt umber colored glaze. The dish was wheel-thrown at its inception, with a raised cleated bottom but its form was relaxed along the edges. Clearly signed on its baseplate, inside the cleated, round ceramic footing is the hand written cursive artist’s signature’G. Deboul, Sant Vicens’ (Fr an ce) with what appears to be a hieroglyphic hallmark indicating the ceramic plate was realized in Sant Vicens. An extraordinary work of Fr en ch Modernist art pottery and a fine example of the mid-20th century ceramic art produced in Sant Vicens in the southeast of Fr an ce in the sun splashed, warm Fr en ch Riviera.
