Rare Brussels Faience Pottery Folk Art Dog Figure / French-Belgium 18th Century. Fine and rare Brussels Faience pottery model of a dog dating to the 18th century. Beautifully sculpted in the best naive manner, this dog is decorated by hand with a milky white faience glaze with detailed features in manganese-eggplant, blue, yellow and black tin glazes. Possibly by Philippe Mombaers. Possibly the Hors La Porte de Laeken factory, circa 1750-85. This female dog, which is sitting on a flat base, has an endearing expression, painted eyelashes, a collar with five yellow bells, human-like ears, and up-curled tail. She is a very good dog! The underside of the base is unglazed allowing the terra-cotta clay to be seen. There are no markings and the two small paper labels remain, on fragmentary and one with very faded writing in india ink (see photos). HEIGHT : 6 1/4 16 cm. BASE : 2 1/2″ x 4 1/8″ 6.5 cm. X 10.5 cm. Very fine condition for a pottery sculpture of 200 or more years old. Glaze roughness to the dog’s right ear and right foot. The only losses are to the bow of the collar at the back of her neck (see photos). Faience tin-glazed and enameled earthenware, first emerged in France and Belgium during the sixteenth century. French faience was used at the court of Louis XIV as part of elaborate meals and displays, with large-scale vessels incorporated into the Baroque garden designs of Versailles. Earlier examples of French faience attest to the strong influence of maiolica artists from Italy.
