This is a lovely antique French faience polychrome scalloped-edge plate decorated with a stylised coat of arms. It is decorated in a style very characteristic of the Desvres decorators (led by the Fourmaintraux family). I think that the basis of construction (including the footrim) as well as the decoration clearly demonstrate that this lovely piece is antique. The principal decoration on this lovely plate is a central coat of arms based on that of the Duke of Brittany, including the two ermines rampant and the scroll beneath, although it also includes the three fleur de lis of the Kings of France. It in a typical Desvres palette of dark blue, yellow, green, red, aubergine and brownish black. The beautifully painted motifs include lots of wild flowers and red cross hatching (‘ marli’). There is a very clear monogram on the base, which represents the decorator. I read it as “VA”. This lovely piece is in excellent condition for its age. There are a few small chips to the outer rim. Only one of these is in the glazed top surface. There is also a very old chip and some associated glaze loss on the footrim. All these are clearly shown in the photos.
