French faience trefoil sweetmeat dish decorated in polychrome enamels dating from the mid 19th century. It has 3 large round main sections with a fluted form, and meeting in the centre where it rises up with a moulded rose flower on top. Off this rose in loops around the centre and spreading out between each dish are finely modelled green glazed stems, each ending in a rose bud sitting in 3 further round dishes nestled between the larger bowls. The main bowls are rimmed in brown and hold different hand painted scenes, 2 depicting exotic birds in trees against a landscape. The third holds an armorial crest framed with floral sprays as are the smaller bowls around the buds and these are rimmed in blue. It measures 32cm (12 1/2″) wide and 10cm (4″) high. Condition is good with no significant damage, with quite a few small glaze losses as is common with tin glazed pottery and a couple of larger chips at the rims going a bit deeper into the clay. Maker unknown, marked “Aprey” to the reverse in brown. The item “Large Antique French Faience Sweetmeat / Hors D’Oeuvres Dish” is in sale since Tuesday, April 23, 2019.
