Desvres CLOWN FACE JUG HARLEQUIN. French Faience 2, c. This rare and whimsical French Faience Antique Fourmaintraux figural jug. Is in the form of a bust of a clown jug, pichet, or pitcher. Has a subject matter of a whimsical costumed clown or harlequin on a plinth, wearing a patterned scarf cap with mystical symbols and a large ruffled collar. Has a large rear handle. Is modeled in deep relief- the modeling, decorating, and glaze are well done with typical colors of Desvres pottery: creamy white background decorated with varying shades of blue. Has a glazed bottom convex underside; the foot rim is unglazed in the brown clay typical of the Desvres region. There are two makers marks: stylized markings in a blue glaze of FC and a 1. These are early marks of Charles and Francois Fourmaintraux, old and original French Art Pottery, made made in the Desvres region of France at the Fourmaintraux Factory circa 1900 to 1905. 6.7 Tall X 6.4 Wide X 7.2 Deep. The estimated date is circa 1900. This French Antique Desvres CLOWN FACE JUG HARLEQUIN. Fourmaintraux is in good condition: as noted, there are some old surface chips – including losses on the outside tip of the spout, several losses on the outside surround of the collars ruffled edge, and several other minor losses. Please see all photos which are a part of this description. Otherwise, condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. Overall, this work is sound, having no other chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. Please note; photos have been taken in indirect sunlight; therefore, reflections and lighting spots may appear, but do not necessarily indicate defects. This is Desvres style fine country French art pottery. This style includes production techniques whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied and worked in stages upon a modeled terra cotta pottery form and fired several times in a kiln. It is noted that French Faience is not inherently “perfect” – larger pieces were still hand made in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over.
