This is a very interesting plate with unusual decoration. It is on the small side, six and a quarter inches in diameter, and marked with a joined AP for the Aprey factory in France. From about 1765 to 1781 the painters Jarry and Jacotin established a reputation for Aprey’s brilliant, exotically styled bird and flower decoration and miniature landscapes on rococo scrolls. One reference states: The birds, very lively in their colors, of precise workmanship, with dappled feathers, have no claim to the truth. These are birds of which we read the following:’Joseph Lallemant de Villehaut, knight of Saint-Louis, lord of Aprey, presents to the elected General that, by means of encouragements which have been granted him, he has been able to increase his manufacture, to give solidity to his clay and finesse to the decoration'; that he has also’given all his attention so that the manager will carefully follow’ the best possible shapes, by conforming with exactness to the models’which he obtains each year from the manufacture of Sèvres,’ which entails considerable expense. In fact, the birds of Aprey are absolutely whimsical, invented from scratch by the imagination of the artists. With their astonishing plumes, they shelter under huge wings with vibrant colors, and seem embarrassed by the prodigious tails they drag in their wake. Despite this paraphernalia, they always look alert, and are very decorative. They are found, sometimes perched on a fence or a tree, sometimes placed on a terrace delimited by a rock ornament, or standing out against a background of landscape. Sometimes they flutter, hunt, or fight among themselves in the air. They resemble those painted at Sceaux, at Niderviller, and even at Sevres in certain instances. Well, that’s enough reference material. This seldom-seen plate has a small unseen chip on the back rim and has none of the glaze flaws that faience from Aprey often has.
