Offered is this wonderful large antique majolica faience french plate from Saint Clement or Luneville, France. In the 18th century, the pieces were not marked. From 1830 we see marks mostly painted by hand…. Saint Clement could be painted fully or abrieviated and sometime with numbers. This beautiful French faience plate features a scalloped and “Combed” rim with pink and blue flowers and green leaves. The center features the famous “coq au panier” with the french rooster sitting a top a blue basket with red and yellow flowers on green grass. The decor “au coq” or rooster was one of the traditional decorations of the St. In 1789 it became the emblem of the revolution. It represented the nation of France and was adopted as the symbol of vigilance. Towards the end of the 19th century the rooster becomes more of a decoration with floral motifs spilling out of a basket rather than a symbol of revolution. Once they made this switch, this decoration became very popular. This beautiful plate is in excellent shape for its great age with no chips, cracks or repairs on the front. It has a glaze chip and 3 stilt marks on the back from the kiln, see photos. It measures 10 inches in diameter. It will make a stunning item for display. This is a really great and rare find.
