Antique Nevers MONTAGNON CHAUFERRETTE, French Faience Book Hand Warmer, c. This is a rare and unusual antique French Faience CHAUFERRETTE made in the Nevers region of France. The subject matter includes a pottery Hand Warmer in the shape of a Book, with a décor on the front cover of a cupid with outstretched arms reaching for a bird, next to a castle in the mountains, and Mon oie fait tout (My goose does everything); the cover is pierced. On the spine of the book is the name of the maker A. On the back cover a two geese, a plinth, a birdcage, the sun, and the moon and Quand cette oiseau chantera, mon amour finera (When this bird will sing, my love will end), and Je ni rentrerai jamais (I will never go back). There is a hole in the top for a cork. The modeling, decorating, and glaze are very well done with typical colors of Montagnon pottery: creamy white background decorated with bright dark blue, light blue, brilliant lemon yellow, iron red, and sage green. The mark is the mark of Gabriel MONTAGNON (1899- 1937). The estimated date is circa 1910. This French Faience Antique MONTAGNON CHAUFERRETTE is in very good condition. Condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting.
