14″ long x 6-1/2″ wide x 7 high. A stunning large antique jardiniere or planter painted by George Martel from Desvres, a town situated in the north of France that was a leading centre for porcelain design beginning in the 1760s. This piece dates to circa 1920. The central cartouche features a domestic scene of a woman spinning and two children at a hearth. The Bretagne crest with ermine tails and fleur-de-lys decorate the reverse with the Arabesque pattern in green above. During the nineteenth century, Desvres became the most important earthenware centre in northern France. George Martel, active c. 1900, set up one of the largest ceramic factories in the area. His work is represented in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The condition is excellent, especially for its age, and we find no chips, cracks or breaks. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.
