Early 19th century Desvres French faience jewellery box of ovoid fluted form with a hinged domed lid. Gilt metal mounts with a grotesque Roman mask clasp. Hand-painted all over with an Oriental design of exotic birds of paradise, polychrome flowers, foliage and scrolls. The base bears the factory listing: Desvres France pottery. The Desvres pottery tradition dates back to the 18th century, drawing inspiration from renowned porcelain works like Delft, Rouen, and Strasbourg. However, it wasn’t until the 19th century that they expanded their production to include decorated tiles, which complemented their existing line of dishes, plates, and vases, for which they were renowned.
