The plates date to the late 1800’s. Shows a portrait of Charles VIII (“The Affable”); the other. Depicts the crowned crests of the two houses (Brittany & Valois). A reference to the place the marriage occurred (Chateau Langeais) appears as a subtitle on each plate. Each plate is trimmed in red and blue, with a blue scalloped / red dotted verge. The backs are pierced for a hanging wire. This plate has a handpainted mark en verso “381” and entertwined “AC”. Each plate is hand painted. Alcide Chaumeil was a major contributor to 19th century French faience artistry, and this piece is one of the finest examples of his work. The company was based in Loire and Paris with works dating the the late 1800’s. His work is considered in the “Big Five” as far as international collectors of French faience including Quimper, Desvres, Malicorne, and Loire producer Ulysse. This tag goes with the Charles VIII plate. Charles VIII, called the Affable was King of France from 1483 to his death in 1498. He married Anne of Brittany in 1491. Anne of Brittany was reigning Duchess of Brittany from 1488 until her death, and Queen of France from 1491 to 1498 and from 1499 to her death. She is the only woman to have been queen consort of France twice (she married Louis XII in 1499). Not to mention an annulled marriage at age 13 to Maximillian Holy Roman Emperor m. Note the overlap – marriage #1 was not annulled until after marriage #2. Moderate crazing, but no discoloration. Paint intact without erosion. No chips, flakes, breaks, mends, repairs, cracks, hairlines, blemishes, or mentionable boo-boo’s. Don’t feel anything amiss when I run finger around edges. Dimensions: 9.25″ Diameter x 1″ Deep. Unpacked weight: 1 pound, 2 oz. Note some photos appear redundant because I take photos from all possible angles. On symmetrical items, these photos may appear redundant when there are no distinguishing differences or condition issues between side views. All dimensions and weights approximate. I try to list EVERY flaw which would be commented on something in an antique or vintage condition – this does not mean all imperfections resulting from normal wear & use require comment.
