DRAGON CANDLESTICK HOLDER #1. Desvres French Faience 9 in. This Desvres French Faience DRAGON CANDLESTICK HOLDER. Includes a figure of a whimsical standing dragon with a large bobeche finial. Is modeled in deep relief; the hand painting, décor and glaze are very well done, in the style of Fourmaintraux faience. Is decorated with stylized accents, and a typical color palette of Desvres, including a creamy white background decorated with light blue, yellow, green, iron red, and magenta. Has paperweight eyes. Has an underglaze brown on the underside with the maker’s mark of Charles Fourmaintraux-Houzel (1905 -1930), 1307, and an unknown symbol; the underside feet and tail end are unglazed. The estimated date is circa 1910. This Desvres Fourmaintraux Antique DRAGON CANDLESTICK HOLDER is in very good condition. Condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. Overall, this work is sound, having no other chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. Please see all photos which are a part of this description. This is Desvres style fine country French art pottery. This style includes production techniques whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied and worked in stages upon a modeled terra cotta pottery form and fired several times in a kiln. It is noted that French Faience is not inherently “perfect” – larger pieces were still hand made in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over.
