Antique European/French Faience Japanism Aesthetic Movement Earthenware Vase
Antique Faience Aesthetic Movement Japanism/Japanesque-style ceramic Vase, mid – late 19th century, retailed by Samuel Child and Co, Baltimore, painted with over glaze white and blue Japanesque patterns on top and bottom parts, large relief flowers with metallic – silver and gold luster finish, dark green and deep red accents on cream colored body. Very good overall condition, lovely colors, minor wear and use marks. Small not noticeable hairline near the top rim. Apears to be small repair around the rim, there is a color difference and small smooth area on the top of the rim. Please see the last photo. Light crazing – occasional very faint lines. Its lovely and rare, good sized piece, measures 11.5H and feels solid and heavy. Google book: Industries of Maryland: A Descriptive Review of the Manufacturing and Mercantile Industries Published 1882, page 220. (Description of the Samuel Child & Co Store). According to the article, Mr. Childs wares are the finest and best in the market, as Mr. Child makes an annual trip to Europe for the purpose of purchasing and selecting this stock of goods to cater to the wants of his own special line of trade. At the time the article was published in 1882, Mr Childs store at 20 N Charles street had been operating for 15 years. Last two images are store ads from 1869 and 1874.
