FOURMAINTRAUX Antique French Faience c1. This rare and whimsical DESVRES WEE CAT DOUBLE SALT CHARLES FOURMAINTRAUX. Includes a seated upright WEE CAT with an expressive face. Is decorated with a floral patterned décor; he is seated upright, flanked by of two oval baskets. Has a bottom underside which is glazed; with rim unglazed in the clay typical of the Desvres region. Has makers marks on the underside: markings in a manganese glaze of F E , 38 , 892, and FRANCE. These are early marks of Charles and Francois Fourmaintraux, old and original French Art Pottery, made at the Fourmaintraux Factory in the Desvres region of France from 1 900 to 190 5. The modeling, decorating, and glaze are well done with typical colors of Desvres pottery: creamy bluish white background decorated with dark blue, cornflower blue, green, yellow, iron red, and manganese. The estimated date is circa 1 905. Dimensions (in inches): 2.8 Tall X 3.7 Wide X 3.7 Deep. Weight: 4.3 Oz. This is Desvres style fine country French art pottery. This style includes production techniques whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied and worked in stages upon a modeled terra cotta pottery form, and fired several times in a kiln. It is noted that French Faience is not inherently “perfect” – larger pieces were still hand made in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over. This isn’t damage- this is part of the history of old pottery and how it was made.
