Is a figural salt, or saleron – a figurine of a double. A lady with two faces, bonnets, and arms. Dressed in colloquial garb, the ensemble includes fancy dress, and bonnet. With a décor of flowers. The outsides of the bonnets are scalloped in relief. Stands backto-back woman and man, each holding a basket in outstretched arms. Is modeled in deep relief; the hand painting, décor and glaze are well done. Is decorated with stylized accents, and a typical color palette of Desvres, including a creamy white background decorated with blue, green, yellow, and iron red. Has a small notation on the outside side bottom, 1792. Is marked on the inside base in blue with the mark of ROUEN and in manganese 651 ; the underside interior is glazed, the base rim foot is unglazed. The estimated date is c. LADY DOUBLE SALT s igned ROUEN is in very good condition. C ondition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. This style includes production techniques whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied and worked in stages upon a modeled terra cotta pottery form, and fired several times in a kiln. It is noted that French Faience is not inherently “perfect” – larger pieces were still hand made in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over. This isn’t damage- this is part of the history of old pottery and how it was made.
