Signed French Faience Quimper Pottery Old Breton Nursemaid Bust This massive, scowling old Breton woman looks like a nursemaid from a classic story. Wearing simple black with an ornate yellow pattern, the hag stares gloomily ahead, slightly hunched over. Her white headpiece with golden patterns complements her clothes. The piece is quite detailed with even the wrinkles looking life-like. Models were often developed by the artists, but the painting was usually done in workshops by squads of painters under the direction of a chef datelier. This piece was signed by Porson and is edition 170 of 200. She would make a fabulous addition to any Quimper collection. The tin-glazed hand painted French faience known as Quimper Pottery pronounced cam-pair has been manufactured in Quimper, a town in Brittany, France, for over 300 years. Although the area has been associated with pottery as far back as the Gallo-Roman era, Jean Baptiste Bousquet is credited with being the founder of Quimper Pottery. Bousquet built his kilns in the vicinity in 1685 and was given a royal manufacturing license by King Louis XIV. Since that time, Quimper has been highly collectible and is known around the world for its French countryside style of pottery. L: 15 ¾ in (40 cm) W: 9 ½ in (24.1 cm) H: 13 in (33 cm).
