An antique French faience desktop letter holder by Sarraguimines of Lorraine, France. Measures approximately 8 and 1/8 inches wide, 3 and 1/8 inches deep and 6 and 3/4 inches high. Weighs approximately 2 pounds and 12 ounces. Marked on the back as shown with the black printed Sarraguimines company mark of 1875 to 1900. Below the company mark is what appears to be a handwritten lower case letter b, also in black. Both of these marks are under the glaze. In addition to those two marks, there is a small impressed upper case H on the bottom. CONDITION: Overall very good condition, especially considering the age and the purpose. I have listed it as “as-is” because it has a small chip on the inner lip of the bottom front wall. You can see it in my 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th photos. It’s an old chip and it’s small and if you look at the holder straight on, it blends in with the floral design on the closest wall and won’t be noticed. There are also some flaws from the making such as kiln debris on the floor of the interior of the middle pocket (5th photo) and kiln debris on the backside below the upper edge. 7th, 8th and 9th photos. There are also some tiny imperfections that are typical of antique faience such as flea bites, kiln marks, surface bumps, slightly rough edges, tiny glaze skips, a dent that looks like a chip but is actually glazed over, etc. There is a small bit of shelf wear to the bottom but surprisingly little, all things considered. Makes the expected faience “thunk” sound when tapped. Thanks so very much for stopping by!
