Antique French Glazed Pot A Confit Pottery Faience Terracotta Earthenware
Offered is an wonderful genuine antique. Confit Pot – Confit is the French word meaning to preserve. French pots confits were used for storing preserves throughout Southwest France. The pots were buried in the ground or stored in stone lined larders – this storage preserved without refrigeration. The bottom halves were left unglazed for burying in the ground as the glaze would peel off. The glaze on this pot is an ochre yellow or mustard color. I’ve traveled often and extensively and I can’t get enough of these French Pots Confit – they look wonderful and add warmth inside and outside. Confit Pots lend themselves to many inspiring decorating ideas. I fill with greenery, flowers, or leave on their own. A Confit Pot can be seen in Vincent Van Gogh’s painting “Sunflowers”. I’ve had a Confit Pot fashioned into a lamp for my den and have several gathered under a French Server brought back from Normandy – their timeworn patina is a treasure for kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms, dens and gardens. The opening measures 6. Inches (17 cm) across at the top. It measures 9¾ inches (25 cm) across the handles. The bottom measures 4. Inches (12 cm) in diameter and the piece is 10¼ inches (26 cm) tall. Perfect size for a mantle, garden bench, kitchen counter or table centerpiece filled with flowers or greenery. This beautiful 19th century pot is nicely crafted and detailed. It features an amphora-shaped earthenware body with two flat curved handles and lustrous yellow and ochre glaze. The pot is in good antique condition, with wear and patina commensurate with age. There are obvious manufacturing flaws, chips, and glaze skips along with time earned patina. This all adds to the beauty and provenance of these old pots. This pot, full of character and strength has wear and patina commensurate with age. Please see photos for condition details. ®, in this listing. E appreciate your support of our small business.
