Fabulous, unusual Choisy-Le-Roi faience pottery comport by Hippolyte Boulenger & Co. Marked to the base as the Tai pattern, it features a square sided round top, with under-glaze image of a crab under a large exotic leaf I think it’s a colocasia or philodendron if that is of interest! In cobalt blue on a cream ground. The wide rim has a Greek key design band running around it. The comport is raised up on a column mounted with 3 beautifully modelled elephant heads also all in deep blue with their detailed headdresses, eyes and tusks left cream. The trunks curve out at the base resting on a plain stepped foot. 1860, an unusual and rare design and shape. It measures 6 1/2″ high and 9 1/2″ wide. Condition is very good with no damage. There is some crazing as is common with this type of faience and some discolouration to the base cream ground as a result as you can see in the photos.
