Stunning early 1800’s French Faience Polychrome hard paste porcelain enamel plate or plaque. Plate measures 9 across. Plate and frame measures 18 across. The frame is from the 1800’s, made of plaster and wood. The back of the plate is exposed, the paper peeled back. The plate has a deep foot, and has faint incised marks along the edge. There are also 4 kiln “registration” marks in the centre. The plate depicts a gentleman leaning on a stump, he has a walking stick and a large feather in his cap. A walled fortress with turrets and steeples can be seen in the background. There are two intentional depressions in the plate at the feet of the figure. The plate is hand painted and signed J. The frame is ornate with scrollwork on the outside edge and floral detail on the inside edge. One tiny bit of wood floral has fallen off and is rattling around under the glass. It can be re-glued. There is also a wide velvet border. The assembly is a bit loose, but secure. Glass may not be original, it’s difficult to tell. Please contact me if you have any questions.
