Stunning late 19th Century French Glazed Enamel Faience Clock with Japy Frères movement. The clock is elaborately decorated in vibrant polychrome enamel on a bright turquoise blue ground and features a Chinese dragon and symbols as well as blossoms and cartouches. In the late 19th Century, to satisfy the demand for Japonism / Japonisme and a revival of interest in Chinoiserie, the Longwy factory developed the technique of overglaze enamel decoration similar to Cloisonné. Other factories such as the Faïencerie de Gien and Faïencerie de Jules Vieillard in Bordeaux were also known for their enamel wares. The case of this clock appears to be unmarked, but I believe it was possibly the work of one of these factories. The clock case is in very good condition with minor surface wear and crazing / crackling due to age and use. The are no chips, cracks or damage. The gilt metal and glass bezel is in very good condition and the hinge opens and closes neatly. The circular gilt metal back cover on the clock case opens to reveal the movement stamped with numbers with the Japy Frères & Cie Gde Medaille d’Honneur signifying that Japy Frères was awarded a medal at the 1855 Paris Exposition, allowing them to display the award on their movements until the time another award might be won at a future exposition. The beautiful enamel dial and clock hands are also in very good condition. It is missing the pendulum and key and has not been wound in years. When the clock is moved, it sometimes sounds as if it is starting to run, but stops. DIMENSIONS: 10″H x 9″W x 4 3/8 Deep.
