EXCEPTIONAL EARLY QUIMPER FAIENCE JARDINIERE dating around the 1870’s. It is of MUSEUM quality. This particular example was manufactured by ” La Grande Maison La Hubaudiere ” in Quimper , France. It is a heavy and large imposing work of art: 14″5/8 L x 8″1/2 W x 45/8 H. Signed ” HB ” ONLY (without the the word ” Quimper “). A Quimper piece signed ” HB Quimper ” would indicate a later issue. The 19th Century HB only and very first HB Quimper pieces are easy to spot for experienced collectors. Delicate brush strokes, beautiful quaint color palette, some inconspicuous craze lines, appropriate fleabites, soft radiance of the glaze, motion in the clothing and naive pleasant facial renditions of the subjects, all are unique to the early HB only examples and contribute to their charm and appeal. Each medaillon displays a quaint and charming rural scene. “La Grande Maison La Hubaudiere” pieces always have fleabites, some more than others. If a Quimper piece has none then it is no t 19th Century. Fleabites on a transitional HB Quimper piece demonstrate that the piece is a very early example, albeit not as old as a HB alone piece (see last picture for examples).
