LADY DOUBLE SALT Nevers style marked S TC C IMENY Antique French Faience c. This French Faience Desvres LADY DOUBLE SALT. Is a figural salt, or saleron – a figurine of a double lady dressed in colloquial garb, her ensemble includes fancy dress, and bonnet. Stands backto-back with her twin, each holding a basket in outstretched arms. Is modeled in deep relief; the hand painting, décor and glaze are very well done. Is brightly decorated with stylized accents, and a typical color palette of the Nevers region, including a lustrous glaze, and creamy white background decorated with dark and bright blue, green, yellow, iron red, and magenta. Is marked on the inside base in bl ack with the Stc Cimeny , and 12. Stc Cimeny, b elieved to be connected with Chatea u St. The underside interior is glazed, the base rim foot is unglazed. The estimated date is circa 1 895. This LADY DOUBLE SALT Nevers style marked Stc Cimeny is in good condition- excepting that the one of the bas k ets has had an old professional restoration, and there is a glaze loss to that side of the body; there is a glaze loss on one ladies’ nose. Otherwise, condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. Overall, this work is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no other apparent repairs or restorations. Style fine country French art pottery. This style includes production techniques whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied and worked in stages upon a modeled terra cotta pottery form, and fired several times in a kiln. It is noted that French Faience is not inherently “perfect” – larger pieces were still hand made in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over.
