GEORGE MARTEL Seated Lady SALT Antique French DESVRES Faience c19 10 Whimsical. This is a rare and whimsical French Antique GEORGE MARTEL Seated Lady SALT made in the Desvres region of France. The subject matter includes a lady with a period patterned dress, scarf, and bonnet cap; she is partially seated, a large basket at her back, her hands on her lap, with a double handled basket in front. The bottom underside is glazed; the foot rim is unglazed typical of faience the Desvres region. There are two makers marks: markings in a manganese glaze of MC, 18, 59, and Le Tréport. These are early marks of GEORGE MARTEL, c. 1900 to 1920, old and original French Art Pottery, made at the GEO MARTEL factory, located at Rue du Pont des Chaux. The modeling, decorating, and glaze are well done with typical colors of Desvres pottery: creamy white background decorated with mustard yellow, lemon yellow, orange, bright blue, green, and manganese. Please note this is not Quimper or Nevers faience, but Desvres fine French art pottery. Dimensions (in inches): 4.5 Tall X 2.7 Wide X 4.9 Deep. Weight 8.5 Oz. The estimated date is circa 1910. This French Antique GEORGE MARTEL Seated Lady SALT is in fairly good condition- on the front double basket there is a missing section of handle where broken off, on the front left basket a line crack from the original making, and a couple small glaze losses. Otherwise, condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. Overall, this item is sound, having no other chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. Please see all photos which are a part of this description.
