Includes an elegantly costumed gentleman with an expressive face and beard. Is wearing a period style floral patterned ensemble including a short floral jacket with ruffled collar, striped girdle, floral breeches, wearing stockings and shoes; and fedora style chapeau (hat); he is standing on a plinth, next to two large adjoining baskets on his right; and a large urn pot on his left. Has a bottom underside which is glazed; the rimfoot is unglazed in the brown clay typical of the Desvres region. The modeling, decorating, and glaze are well done with typical colors of Desvres pottery: creamy white background decorated with dark blue, cornflower blue, green, yellow, and iron red. The estimated date is circa 1885. Dimensions (in inches): 7.2 Tall X 5.0 Wide X 3.2 Deep. This is Desvres style fine country French art pottery. This style includes production techniques whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied and worked in stages upon a modeled terra cotta pottery form, and fired several times in a kiln. It is noted that French Faience is not inherently “perfect” – larger pieces were still hand made in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over. This isn’t damage- this is part of the history of old pottery and how it was made.
