On offer today is an interesting antique figural hinged box. It may have been made for snuff, tobacco, pills or patches. The box is in the shape of a recumbent monk in blue floral robes. Note the gourd flask at his waist. His dreamy expression leads me to believe he may represent an opium smoker. It’s made of enameled faience (ceramic) of the type used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in France and England. MARKS: The enameled parts are not signed, but there is the tete d’aigle (French eagle head) mark in the gilt silver box hinge/rim at one end. This mark indicates the box may be as early as the late 18th century (circa 1790s). There is a short black line in the glaze at one inside end of the box, visible in one of the pics above. These are typical of enameled faience snuff boxes of the era. I have priced this interesting piece taking its condition into account. MEASUREMENTS: About 2 1/2 inches long by about 1 1/2 inches wide by 1 3/4 inches tall. This fellow will be splendid for collecting, study or resale. From a non-smoking, pet and perfume-free home.
