This antique plate came from an estate collection of a French lady. She was married to a US soldier in the Second World War and came to live here. This plate has the motto La Liberte ou la Mort (liberty or death) which was the cry of the Jacobins during the French Revolution, specifically La Terreur. In researching this motto, it is interesting to note that the saying actually came from the US, in 1775 where on March 23rd 1775 Patrick Henry addressed Payton Randolph and famously ended his speech with the words: Give me Liberty or give me Death. The plate is old, probably from the very beginning of the 20th century, when the Malicorne faience producers started reproducing the more famous designs and plates from the 19th century. The plate is clearly hand done, with rough edges end pin pricks on the back and front in the glazing where the plate was positioned while firing. There are three letters on the back: N and underneath it IX, possibly 9th in a series. The plate has crazing on both the front and back, but no chips or cracks. It is a great decorative piece with great history. Measurements are: 9 diameter and 1 ½ tall.
