18th century FRENCH RARE 1710-20 FAIENCE Saint-Cloud jug rice design
18th century FRENCH VERY RARE 1700 FAIENCE Saint-Cloud jug rice design in a beautiful cream white glaze. This was glaze and design which was used prior to the blue and white. IN 1702 PHILIPPE 1 (DUKE OF ORLEANS) gave letters patent to the family of Pierre Chicanceau, who passed the the manufacturing via marriage to the family of Henri Trou. Pierre Chicanceau was said to have been making porcelain as’perfect as the Chinese’ since 1693. Saint-Cloud porcelain was manufactured from the last quarter of the 17th century until 1766. Much of the porcelain, which was a yellowish or creamy off-white. This design is called the “rice” pattern, as it resembles grains of rice. The face on the spout is simply exquisite. At one time it more than likely had a silver lid that was attached. It has long since gone – but this beauty remains. There is one slither missing as seen in image #3. It was a very long time ago and it has now discoloured. Otherwise, the piece is intact. One must also take into consideration that it is 300 years old and delicate. DIMENSION: 7-1/8″ HEIGHT 5-1/2″ DIAM AT LARGEST POINT. Time for the last of my former vast collection to go to other homes. IT WILL BE PACKED WITH GREAT LOVING CARE AND INSURED. HOWEVER, I THINK IT WOULD BE IRREPLACEABLE. I have not seen another in the last 20 years of collecting and curating.
